Default Help with best settings for indoors

I'm shooting a class reunion inside at night with no umbrella flash. It is in a hotel ball room so we'll have the room lights (probably florescent) I've shot indoor receptions before with no problem but I need the best settings for my Nikon D50 for the formals.
Basically I will be shooting With the D50 and either an 18-55 lens or a 28-80 (what ever you suggest) I have a Nikon Speedlight 600 and I will use a tripod. I will be shooting couples and be doing simple basic poses. Nothing special. The background will just be decorations that the Event planner set up. (That's just what they want.)
Here is an example of what my shots look like indoors on these settings. It was a little dark and had to be lightened up and for some reason the color version wouldn't upload, sorry. It was shot with a sutter speed of 1/60 ISO 500 and F5/6
How would you set YOUR camera?

I would figure a way to get the flash on the tripod and off carmera with a diffuser/light modifier. From what you describe I understand the "couple shoot" portion of the event as being in a static location. Maximize the advantage of that consistant enviornment.
I understand the D50 doesn't have a commander mode but even an optical peanut slave should provide the functionality.
If that is not a possibility, why not just shoot in program? Use the program shift if the aperture wants to go wide open and let the ttl work the light output management.
