Default Any advice for my first planned shoot?

Hey all, I'm going to be doing a father/daughter portrait session this weekend for a relative, and it's the first time I've ever attempted a more formal/intentional style. His daughter's two years old. I've read through a lot of the tutorials on the site, and I have a general idea of what we're planning, I'm just looking for advice from those of you that have done this before. Are there different techniques or tricks you tend to use when taking portraits of familys, or things you've found that work well for you?
My biggest fear with this is that, while I've grown up with him and we're pretty close, because I'm more familiar with them I won't be as aware of the little moments that present themselves because they've become commonplace.
My apologies if this is difficult to read, it's five a.m. and I just finished up six hours of homework.

If I were doing this here is how I would do it. Make sure their clothing matches. No short sleeves and no shorts. Skin attracts our eyes so if the faces is the only skin available the viewer will look at the faces not the legs or the arms. Have dad bring along his wife (if possible) and his daughter's favorite book. Find an outdoor spot where the lighting will be good and the background looks nice. Several moments before they arrive make sure your camera is set up correctly as far as ISO, then take a meter reading, shoot a grey card and set those readings into the camera. When they arrive chit chat for several moments then ease them into a good pose and check the light pattern on their faces. Dad should be seated on a stump, or a short bar stool and the girl standing or seated on his lap. Have dad begin reading while you say nothing to distract either one of them. Move slowly around them in an arc while viewing them in the viewfinder and shoot when you see something you like. Don't shoot standing up, kneel down because they will be lower than you and you don't want to look down on them. After you have several good "unposed" shots, have mom (or you) ask them in a low, sweet, kind voice to "look at me (or look at mommy)" and when they do shoot (mom is right beside you.) Then tell them to smile and shoot several more, then ask dad to continue to read. Repeat and review. If they like them great. If not change whatever they don't like and shoot again Repeat again.
