Hello everyone,
I recently was given an opportunity to photograph a girl with Cerebral Palsy. I've never had a shoot like this and am wondering if there are those out there that might have suggestions on how to approach an shoot like this, what are the things I should expect, what should I be sensitive too? This should be a good challenge and will probably push a lot of my comfort zones as a photographer. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

As the father of a handicapped child I have a couple of words for you. First, be honest. No one is expecting you to make this child look like something they are not. No one would buy the picture if you did. That being said, you still need to do what you would do for any portrait; do your best to make them look good and to allow your image to reveal something about their character that those who love them cherish. This sounds like an impossible order but it can be done. Talk to the family about things they do that they think are adorable. Try to develop a quick relationship where the two of your are interacting one to one. It's a tall order, but it can be done.
