Default What mode do you favor?

For portraits? I have been shooting my kids and my nieces, and I have been using Apt mode on my Nikon D3000. Not sure if there is a mode you are "supposed" to use or not, but I was wondering what most others favored? I have only been doing this about 2 months.

For snapshots use whatever you need to get the job done and whatever keeps you from having to constantly keep looking at the camera and making changes and fiddling with the controls. I shoot in manual, but I have complete control over my exposure and white balance all the time.

I like to shoot in aperture priority, to control DOF. But with kids if they can't stand still I will use shutter priority to freeze them.

I guess depending on what needs to be done. But normally,

Portraits: Usually on AV Mode but I tend to use more and more of manual.

Most of the time I shoot in manual, but for quick snapshots I'll use P mode (that way I can still have some control). I never use any of the fully auto modes.

I am pretty much always in manual. I am still learning and feel like M forces me to slow down, I don't mean physically slow down but to be more observant. At the moment I am having "point and shoot" envy. I don't need to use my big dslr for snap shots, I thought I did but......I went with a friend who is new to photography to a botanical garden with showing of orchids. Everybody and their brother had a huge slr with a big old lens attached. At least I had a small lens on so I wasn't in everyones way but in general I felt like a massive idiot. It was such overkill. I did get some beautiful shots, but I am I would have been much happier with a P&S with a macro function. The more I learn about photography the more I realize it less about the camera.

Portraits for me usually involves at least one flash, so it goes straight into manual.
