How about asking them to tell you about something they enjoy?

Depending on the age of the subject I ask them to think of: A fuzzy pickle. Elmo. The name of the latest 'tween idol (changes weekly.) Their boy/girlfriend. Their fiance' or fiancee'. Their child or grandchild.

talking is a good start, but be it about something they love or either someone. a mom, dad, husband and wife, child. ask them what makes them laugh or if they can recall a funny moment and have them tell you about it. meanwhile start clicking

or you can read them clips from the odd news section.

Ok. That make sense. The last time I attempted to shot, I was just asking them how's they're day.

Since I am one of the people that HATE to have their photograph taken......I seem to relax more when the photographer asks me about a hobby I have, or something I am familiar with.

When we can talk a little back and forth, this helps make me less nervous.

Hope this helps!

Mel
