Default Can't get face in focus on photos.

I have two questions,
1....Whenever i take a photo of my son i get every part of picture in focus apart from the face. The face is most times not crystal clear,I take my pictures roughly 7 feet away to get his whole body in picture, and i dont really know what fstop and speed to set.I USE iso 100,what f stop should i use and what speed if he is static and not moving?
2... As i dont use flash, should i get a light meter? Im using canon 1dmk2n with canon 2.8 24-70 lens.
comments would be greatfull. thank you.

I don't know if you are just trolling or if this is serious but...

Why in the world do you have a 1dmk2? It appears that you know nothing about photography. Take some time to read the blog posts in regard to the exposure triangle. There are great tips in there that explain what effects shutterspeed, f-stop and ISO have on a picture and their relationship to each other. And, no, you clearly have no need for a light meter. You can use the one build into your camera.

Not knowing how familiar you are with your camera and not seeing a sample image, it is very hard to help you. There are a few variables to getting proper focus and seeing a shot along with the exif data would be helpful.

You might try posting one of your blurry shots in the "Critique" forum in the appropriate category, probably portraits. Be sure to include your specific question about focus and the exif data like ISO, shutter speed, aperture, and the like. Any info about how your camera is set to focus and how you physically go about focussing would also be helpful.

And I would take i speak in math's advice and search the forums a bit to start learning more about how a camera works. If you are new to photography and are starting with the 1d, you will have a bit of learning curve :-)

also check your focus points/metering system/aperature/diopter. i don't like to use flash, but i have been using diffused flash in the house for people (because they don't sit still) and it helps a lot.

just practice and try a few combinations. my hands are not very steady, so my pictures suffer from camera shake with my longer lenses if not on a tripod. i also use my wireless remote to trip the shutter.

can you post some of your photos with the EXIF data please.

fyi: you can grow into your camera, no worries about upgrading for a while. i bought a car i DID NOT know how to drive and now i own that sucker. it's a stick shift and i've mastered the betch. beautiful camera!

I would agree that you can definitely grow into your camera. I was able to get a Nikon D200 at such a good price that even though it was more camera than I was ready for I still took advantage. Learning how to use this camera has been such a great time and learning experience. Take advantage of this website and go through the different tips and articles because they help so much. Also like others have recomended, post a picture with you exif data.

I think you will grow into your camera too! My biggest problem is trying not to let the camera intimidate me. It takes time and lots of practice. Be patient with yourself too.

I am very new to this site, and I love it. I have gotten some great help here. I am new to my Canon Xti and am determined to learn how to use it.

Before you know it, you will be a pro at it and will be one of the people helping out other new people.

Hope to see some of the photos you take!!

Mel
