Default Technique for Political Events

I am going to a few political events - fundraisers - next week, and I was wondering what techniques you would recommend for getting the best photos of the candidates. I particularly want candid photos, at podiums, shaking hands and meeting people, not stiff, posed pool-type shots.

Some obstacles I know I will face are indoor lighting, a backdrop I can't control, and large crowds. If you have run into this type of situation, how did you reconcile it?

FWIW, I am not getting or asking to be paid for whatever shots I get, but I support the candidates and want to help if I can.

(Admins, if I am in the wrong category, please let me know.)

Thank you,

Large aperture lenses, preferably long ones. You're pretty limited in terms of autofocus in that respect for Nikon stuff. See if you cant rent something like an 85 f/1.8 or one of the two DC lenses. They'll give you the range and the aperture. The only problem is that NONE of those are AF-S lenses (AF only), so they wont autofocus on your D3000

Thank you Osmosis, I think I will check out renting the 85 f/1.8. The DC lenses look like they might be a bit over the top for this project.

Thanks for the advice!

With the DC lenses, you dont NEED to use the DC feature. They can, and most often are, used as very very sharp 105 f/2 or 135 f/2 lenses.

Alternatively, see about renting a 70-200 f/2.8.
