Default My Daughter in black & white

Hi All,

I've been using my nifty 50 a bit more lately and just wondering what you think about the composition and PP of this shot of my daughter?

Eyes

EXIF:
ISO - 400
Focal Length - 50mm
Aperture - f/3.5
Shutter Speed - 1/50 sec

Lighting was natural coming in windows above left (of her) and bottom right.

Post was PS3, did I go to far with the sharpening and eyes (upped exposure & sharpened some more)?

I'm very happy with the B&W conversion!

What do you think?

Cheers

I honestly can't decide if I like the composition or not, but it doesn't matter because the capture of those eyes is incredible!

Beautiful child!!

I think I'd crop the shirt out of the left side- maybe just below the shadow under her chin. I guess that would make a slight change to the proportions- problem if you want to print, but maybe it would guide the even more focus on her eyes?

great photo!

Thanks for the replies, I hadn't even considered cropping. I have an 8" square frame that needs filling, I'll see if this works n square when I get to the other computer...

I think I'd like to see the rest of her face, only because the eyes draw me in (great job on those!) but then when I look elsewhere, I feel the bottom is cut off by accident. I wonder if adding on the rest of her face would have meant that keeping the shirt would be a good choice? PS - love the b&w, think you've done a great job with this so far

Thanks

kbmkris - I used the high pass filter sharpening method (google if you don't know it, it's very easy) to sharpen the entire image. I then:

1 - Hit control+j to duplicate sharpening layer
2 - Click the add layer mask button in layers pallete
3 - Fill entire layer mask with black (hides entire layer)
4 - use soft white brush on layer mask to bring back the sharp

Too easy

Anyway here's some cropped versions...

10x8 (sorry about the lines, but the uploader here is running crap at the moment!)

And square

Cheers

I think this is a great capture, and I think the square crop works best. I also like the B&W conversion.

My eyes are distracted by the highlight on, and to the right, of the nose. I like the high key effect, but for some reason this particular highlight is drawing my eyes away from her eyes. It's almost as if my brain wants to see some depth to the nose, but the highlight makes it appear flat, and almost confuses me.

That's just my opinion; do with it what you please!

Cheers,

Mike
