Default poor family

Was trying to take a shot of poor family living on the street.

I took the original picture in color but converted it to sepia to make it look older...

I was trying to get the entire family in the pic instead of focusing on just one person...
every person in the picture has a different expression which i thought was interesting..

I cant make out if the shack and leaves are adding to the shot or distracting it from the main subject. Also, it was a really bright day and it seems that the light was hurting the woman's eyes (you can see from her expression).

Also, it seems that the lower half of the image is much brighter than the upper half??

feel free to critique. thanks.

I think the shacks help make the image.

I'm with Kirb, the shack definitely adds to the image. Not sure if black & white wouldn't have been better than sepia though???

Here's another vote for giving black and white a try.

i'm not at all concerned by the woman squinting or by the brighter bottom of the image. I think adds to the story. In my humble opinion those aspect of the picture point out the heat and hostility of this family's environment in contrast to their not so wonderful shelter from the elements. impressive work

Default Black and white verses Sepia

I love the sepia photo and was not at all impressed with it in black and white. The light and shadows overwhelm the picture in black and white. The sepia just had so much more character to the photo. Just my humble opinion. Karen

The upper half is darker than the lower half as it is in shade--a natural consequence of trees and bulidings blocking the sun. I like the composition, and I think the shacks add to the shot. I don't think the light is hurting the woman's eyes--she's distrustful of the photographer--her face is in the shade; the only one in the sun is the girl in the foreground (and man's chest)--the others are resting out of the heat of the day.

I really like this shot--i think I prefer bw to sepia. Color definitely would be distracting.
