Default Composition and desaturated or no?

Picture 029 Desaturated

Camera: Nikon D5000
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/2000)
Aperture: f/1.8
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: -2 EV

I'm new to photography (and to DPS... this is a fabulous site!), so I need to borrow your eyes. I think this photo is pretty cool, but I'd really like some more insight into how you would improve the composition or the technical aspects of this photo.

Additionally, in the version you see here, I desaturated it most of the way, but not all the way to B&W. You can see the full color version here. Picture 029 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! Do you think the desaturation adds to it? Should I go all the way to B&W? I did no other post-processing. Is there anything else you would do?

Thanks so much for your time and patience with my multitude of questions!

I think it looks better in desat because of the blown out areas...did you shoot in RAW? I'd try recovering those areas...nice pose though

Hmmm, nope. I shot it in JPEG. Darn! I know I should shoot everything in RAW, but I just haven't gotten the hang of post-processing anything yet so I've stuck with JPEG. I guess you've given me one more reason to figure it all out! Thanks for the feedback!

Edited to add: The good news is that the photo is of my husband, who is always plunking around on his guitar and that sun comes into that room just like that every afternoon in the winter. I can get it again!

I think this portrait is great. I love the play of shadows across him.
The one thing you might want to try is to show the face of the guitar a bit more, as its not quite obvious what he's playing.

I love this shot, the composition is good and the lighting great. A little over-exposed, but not enough to detract from the image. The only thing I'd change is to give his right hand a little more room to the edge of the shot.

I don't know why, but I think I must have some a partial desat of about 90% of my guitar shots, I just love the effect.
