Default First Portrait with 50mm

Rachel- Flicker

First portrait taken with 50mm lens. This was taken without any forethought about what my daughter was wearing so I'll probably crop out the lettering of her sweatshirt. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/320)
Aperture: f/1.8
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire
Exposure Program: Aperture-priority AE

Nice image.

Her eyes are soft, it looks like the focus point was around her nose, and mouth.

I'd have shoot this around 1/160 at an aperture of at the most f/2.8

You're right. I noticed that too. The f(1.8) is tough to get right, Thank you for your help. I am a newbee and every comment is greatly appreciated.

instead of fixing the lettering in post why not just take the photo over w/ her wearing something else?

better habit to fix things in frame than in post when not necessary

That's what I was going to say; the lettering is a bit distracting. But, that being said, it's a really good shot!

Thank you. You are absolutely correct. Next time, I'll take into account what she is wearing. It is a far simpler than to photoshop (clone out) the lettering of her shirt.
Thanks again for your help!

JFisher14 - how did you light this? I've just got a 50mm lens for my D70 and am trying out som potraits. I notice you have no flash yet you have a really nice side lit shot of your daughter.

Also, did you use a background?

I had her stand inside our house near our east facing window in the mid afternoon, so there would not be any direct sunlight, just the reflected light off of our concrete porch. I had no background. The meter reading off of my daughter rendered the background as dark (black) The 50 mm f/1.8 lens is great. Any other lens would call for the flash to be used and I wanted to avoid that. That was my first attempt at "people" pictures.

You are going to love the 50 mm lens. I've just started using mine recently.
