Default Sisters

the girls 12 09 5 by 7 web copy

Camera: Nikon D50
Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 70 mm
Exposure Bias: -1/3 EV
Flash: No Flash

I love this photo of three sisters, all beautiful young women. The subject at the top is a bit out-of-focus, the other two are sharp. Any suggestions for future set-ups to get all three in sharp focus? I was using a 70-300 telephoto lens. Would a different lens have been a better choice (I have an 18-55 and a 50 mm prime in my bag).

Any other c/c welcome. I brightened teeth and eyes and removed a color cast to brighten the shirts.

I just noticed a "halo" around the hand draped over the bottom sister's shoulder and along the arm of the sister at top. I think that is an artifact of pp as I blurred the background some and isolated the figures to do so. Any suggestions on how to avoid halos are also welcome.

Thanks,
Anne

I like the photo it is a great shot. I'm very new to photography so I may be way off base but, You mentioned the top sister looks out of focus, she also kind of looks under exposed in relation to the other two. Would setting the aperature for a greater depth of field help?

Does anyone else think the top sister look underexposed?

And I don't know if changing the aperture would help...interesting observation and suggestion. Can anyone else chime in on this?

Hi Anne!

I think they all look just a tad underexposed, actually. And I mean JUST a tad. Why did you have your EV set at -1/3?

The girl on top is also slightly behind the other two, and F/4.0 might be a little too shallow. She might have been a little less soft if you closed down a bit, at least to 5.6 or so, and you'd still get pretty nice bokeh.

Don't know if you've seen this before, it's a fantastic tool! http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

Otherwise, I think it's a really lovely portrait. Great job on the posing.

Thanks for the technical comments. I am not sure why my camera is set to -1/3EV...gotta change that.

Went back and re-processed the photo...brightened it up some more. Here is the result:
