Default lady in bnw

Hi,

I normally don't do portrait, and this was taken while me and my friend here was waiting at the cafe so it is more of a snapshot actually. I am wandering about the bnw.. do the exposure and tones work here? and any suggestions to make it better.?

The conversion is quite muddy...I hope you don't mind, if you do, I can take this down right away. Notice the whites are whiter (shirt collar) and the blacks are blacker, and the skin tones aren't so dead grey and have some depth. I actually may have done too much with the blacks now that I see it here as they've lost detail.....didn't look like that in CS2, only when I got it here! Eh.....you get the general idea.

Nice comp and focus, lovely shallow DOF.

Susan,
Thanks for your discussion of the posted photo and what you did in pp. I found it incredibly helpful as you were very clear is what you saw as muddy and how to correct it. I am new to BW conversions, so seeing such critiques is very helpful.

As for the photo, I think it is nicely composed with a suggestion of a story.

You're welcome, Anne! If I remember correctly, I think I just adjusted the brightness and contrast.
