I would really like to know if you all think that my use of the shadow and natural light was and effective way of soften a couple that have hard features.

Using raw sunshine as your main light source is almost never flattering. Raw sunshine leaves hard harsh shadows and is nearly impossible to tame enough to use for portraiture unless you have several people to hold various light modifiers, gobos, flags, off camera light sources and diffusers. Few people take an entourage like that to do snapshots, especially what there is nearly always a shady spot somewhere close by that can be used without much additional equipment or additional staff.
