I just recently started taking photos out of the "M" mode. I am seriously loving learning photography!
This picture is my granddaughter. It's shot on a Canon 7d at an ISO setting of 800. 1/40th shutter speed, f/5.6 with the 18/135 kit lens. The shot is at 72mm. I used a 100watt Wescott light and a gold reflector. Thank you for any and all criticisms. Glenn |

I agree with the above poster. I think a reflector on camera left would give the image some more depth. And perhaps something lighting up the background? I want to get into doing potraits myself. I'm a noob. Have you looked into any speedlights?

Welcome to DPS. You have a beautiful grandaughter and show her off most excellently here. I look forward to seeing many more of your shots throughout the coming year. PAUL

Your right, I had put the 100 watt light below her face level and facing her and then placed the gold reflector behind and slightly above her head.
I do have a Canon 580 EX Speedlight. Thank you all for your kind words about my granddaughter. I always enjoy hearing from you all. Thank you for taking the time to view and critique the photo. |

If you're wanting to get into portrait photography, you're going to need to put that Speedlite to use (off-camera). That will open up a whole new world of options for you, creatively speaking.
And there are many ways to do it on a smaller budget.

Yes please do, I look forward to learning as much as I can from every artist/photographer. I haven't tried anything off camera with the speedlight yet. I'll play around with it and see how things go and post the results. Again thank you all. Glenn |
