Default Headshots

This is one of a series of headshots i took for a friend, and i feel like it missed the mark. There's something lackluster about the face (of my very pretty friend) in context with the rest of the photo, in addition to the whole thing not being very crisp. This is a continuous problem i'm having that's very frustrating. What can i do to correct this and make this better?

While it's a good shot I think the angle of the photo doesn't do it justice. I don't like the back ground either. You need one that makes her pop, stand out. Hope this helps! Keep up the good work.

The first thing that struck me is the composition is off. A crop where her head is more in the upper left corner and a cutting out of the door knob I think would make it a lot stronger. Then maybe a little post processing to make the colors pop some and it could be a nice image.

Crossed arms = emotionally closed off and doesn't go with her smile. Plus, try shooting when she's sober so she's not falling over...just kidding. Maybe have her lean her shoulder against something and tilt her head if you want to play with angles...keep playing and you'll know when you've hit it.

A good way to keep your image a bit crisper is to move into a much higher aperture. With f/2.2 you really only have a small portion of the image in good focus. In a portrait that's hard - even if you focus directly on her face you might get some blur around her chin or forehead. It'd close down your aperture to f/11 or more, and see if that helps some.
