Default Depth of Field

Hi,

Although I have been a regular visitor to this site, this is the first time I have gathered the courage to submit a photo for critique.

This is my attempt at a 'portrait' of my little one and first serious attempt at using the depth of field. Please let me know what you think about the photograph.

Details:
Kodak 6490, 1/8 sec, F/3.2, 16mm

Thanks.

I would prefer to see the child in sharp focus and have the blanket OOF.

I agree with Benji. The depth of field would look better focused on the baby and leaving the blanket out of focus.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I was actually trying to bend the 'rule' that the subject of the photograph should always be in focus. Wanted to see of the idea appeals to anyone else - apparently not.

I'll remember your suggestion.

Thanks,
Alternate.

I think there are times where the subject can be out of focus...but whatever is in focus should have meaning. For example, if the baby was out of focus and his favorite teddy bear were in focus, that might work b/c there is a purpose to it. JMO.

I have found that one can on occasion break a rule or two in one image and "get by" with it. But most of the time it is best to keep as many of them as possible. The problem is very few know all of them!!! Actually I wrote the book (or perhaps I should say the tutorial) on the rules!

Somebody said on her somewhere that the rules should only be broken once you have good knowledge of them, so I guess that means follow them while you're first learning. Agree with the focused part having meaning....
