Default Eating a lemon

I shot this with the morning sun coming through the sliding glass door. He stood there pretty still for about 20 to 30 seconds. This was taken at 1/50th at 5.3 with my Nikon D40 with the 18-55 kit lens.

I was hoping a few of you could give me some pointers as to how you would have taken this shot. Which settings, etc.

I have since upgraded to the D5000, and I use a Quantaray QDC 900WA for fill light. I would appreciate detailed explanations on different ways you would have approached this shot, and why (assuming you could duplicate the circumstances). Thanks a ton.

I would have had him turned slightly towards the window and had some type of curtain to diffuse the light coming through the window. It appears very strong.

It is too blown out on one side and too dark on the other. Also, the background is way too distracting. While I know it is hard to get a little one to pose (I have four myself) next time try to wait for that light to be a little softer and maybe use a little fill light on his face. I would have also zoomed in a little tighter. All easy fixes...just keep trying!

I really appreciate the comments. The background is distracting. I would agree with you that little ones are hard to get poses from, but I can definitely set up a fill light with a shoe stand (It's usually handy in my bag) and set it to remote. Thanks again for the comments.
