Default UC Protests

It's not my best shot, but one of my better "action" portraits. This was taken during the recent University of California protests that took place because of fee hikes. I didn't take part in it, but it was taking place in front of the dorm I live in, and I couldn't let such a photo-op pass. I was very close to being beaten up in this shot, but it was somewhat exciting.

I would love some critique on the photo, including probably how you would have done the photo differently. And what you like about the picture

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
Shot at 18 mm
Exposure: Auto exposure, Not Defined, 1/25 sec, f/5.6, ISO 800
Flash: Off, Did not fire
Focus: AI Servo AF with a depth of field of infinity (from about 1.8m to about 1.1m)

Very nice, you can definitely get a feeling about the situation. If his face was just a tad sharper, it would be perfect!

Do you have your exif information to post? Knowing your camera settings plays a HUGE part in offering you a good critique

This is a great "in the thick of it" photojounalistic shot. The face of the officer might not be in sharp focus, but to me, it doesn't need to be. It's sufficiently sharp to draw the eye without losing the dynamics of what appears to be a very intense moment.

It looks to me that he's carrying a shotgun - seems a little OTT for a student protest.

I think it was a baton, but the police were carrying tear gas shells and shotguns as well. Some people got tased as well, but they were pretty stupid. The police were really into their job

My photo was chosen to be on the front page of the Wesay website. I was pretty excited and thought I'd share
