Default Granny with her nephew

I took this shot in the park, from a considerable distance. I'm quite new to photography, and I think portrait photography is very complicated. Unfortunately it's hard for me to find willing subjects, so when it's possible, I shoot in the park, hoping to get that interesting shot....
About this particular pic, do you think it's too dark? And...is it clear enough?

I really like the shot. I am new to photography, so take it for what it's worth, but I think the shot could have been brighter. I would have loved to seen the reds pop out against the green leaves. Very cool candid capture though.
