Zach in black

So I took this off the cuff with my nifty fifty and I actually really like it. I asked Zach to smile and he struck the pose and I snapped it. So, needless to say there was not prep on lighting, just hit him with the speedlite, bounced and diffused.

Question is, does he blend too much with the black background? And is the lighting too harsh? Thanks for the imput

On my monitor, there is enough exposure to separate his shirt from the background. The lighting doesn't look too harsh. The biggest problem is the giant orange spots on the sides of his head and the really wrinkled background. Composition wise, I don't like his hand cut off at the bottom and the angle the shot is taken from looks a little too high.

Hmmm didn't see the orange spots. The background was just there and since it wasn't posed, I didn't get to straighten it out! Oh well...maybe i could crop in a little more.

Is this any better? Being to think his head is just weird!
