Default Photos of my friends baby son - my first post.

Hi All,

Found this site whilst browsing the web and it has turned out to be a real gem of information! Many thanks to all those who contribute to make it such a great resource.

Anyway, about the photo. This was taken a few months back, but having only just made time to sort my images out, I decided I might have it critiqued.

I took this on:

Canon 350d with 15-55 f3.5/5.6 kit lens, and wihtout any flash
- Shot at f4.0, in aperature priority mode
- ISO 100

I have only done 2 post processing actions to this: Make it B&W and also soften the edges with a Picassa tool.

So, I am looking for feedback on compositon, detail, good and bad points and advice on what else to try in order to improve my portrait skills. Just purchased a 50mm f1.8 that I will be using in coming weeks, so feedback is very useful.

Many thanks,
Jat

Thanks all for the feedback so far.

It is much appreciated. I am quite proud of how this photo looks, and is probably the best one I have taken so far.

The reflection in the eyes is indeed me taking the shot! Is there any technique to avoid such reflections?

^ the reflection adds to the piece, it makes the child come alive.

I love it apart from I think you have gone too far with softening the edges, I would prefer a bit more sharpness on the hand and hair.

don't try to avoid the reflection! some people (including me) *aspire* to take photos with eyes like that

Many thanks guys and girls. I am humbled by your comments!

The eyes were an accident to be honest, never planned for that to happen - must have been a bonus based on the great light available outdoors and the dark eyes.
