I took this right after getting my 50 mm Canon lens. I'm having a hard time with it getting both eyes in focus in portraits. Is it the angle of his head or is it my aperture setting? Additional Questions: 1. Is it too bright? 2. What do you think of the composition? Canon Rebel XT No Flash 50 mm F1.8 ISO 400 Exposure time: 1/100 |

With F/1.8 you have a wafer thin DOF, so indeed it's hard to get both eyes in focus. Either rotate his head such that both eyes have the same distance to the sensor or use a smaller aperture.
The composition could use some work. His head gets very little vertical space. If you don't want to move further back, I'd crop off a bit more of his hair to give his chin some "breathing room" at the bottom. The brightness is okay with me, but I do miss a small sparkle in his eyes. Having just a small highlight on his iris will bring his eyes out more, and fit in better with the brightness.
