You captured a great expression. The focus is on the hat when i think it should be on her eyes. The skin color seems too red. You can probably fix the color tone but not the focus.

Zona5101 is spot on. Also, I think it may have been better if you had moved to your left slightly to remove the tree from the viewfinder. A good start though..

There is good eye contact going on.... but as others have said the hat is in focus, not the eyes. Look at all good portraits and you'll see theat the eyes are (nearly) always the key element. If you don't have the eyes than it's difficult to rescue the shot.

Compositionally a step to the left or right would have put the tree behind her or removed it from frame, either would work... in addition to this try framing her slightly off centre. Think of the rule of thirds and have key composiotional items at the intersections of the "thirds grid". To do this effectively you'll need to focus and recompose the image OR get good at selecting focus points. What "mode" did you shoot this in ?? I suspect it was the "green square" auto mode in which case the camera will pick the nearest obvious item to focus on. YOU need to take control and tell the camera what to focus on vs let it do the thinking. I look forwards to seeing some more improved shots in the future :-)

Great name by the way, lots better then ferinheight

Anyways, to help you out with the picture. Try getting a lot more detail on the eyes, then if you would like to do some PP (Post Processing) it's a lot easier because you will have that information. So if your using manual focus, check the picture after you take it, and (in your camera) zoom in and see how much detail there is.

I know this is not the image you were going for, but take a look at this link to see what I mean.

It is still a nice picture (your have) and I'm sure she would love to have it

P.S. I can't wait to start skiing !!!!!!!!
