Default First twin photoshoot.

So I had my first newborn and twin photoshoot. This picture started really cute but I am eh with it now. I think if I would've put a reflector at the top of the babies heads it would've helped more, also maybe if I got more of the basket. I was using my 50mm prime, if I used my 18-55 I would've been able to get more right? The colors look a little dull because I desaturated a bit. One baby was so pale and the other was sooo red, it was a little difficult to get the coloring right, I was thinking of making it a BW but I am not sure how I like it or if I like the picture. Any thoughts? Would the 18-55 have worked better? Would seeing the whole basket make it more pleasing? She didn't want completely nakie baby pictures, so we had the diapers on, I think next time I am going to make sure I have diaper covers with me. Does this picture work? I am just not sure.

Camera: Nikon D80
Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture: f/1.8
Focal Length: 50 mm

I think the butterfly is very distracting. Maybe b/c its so much brighter that the rest of photo. And yes, seeing the whole basket would have worked better (IMO) - next time you can try and climb on a chair or a ladder.

I think the lighting is a bit off. It is bright around the diapers and there are some shadows by their heads. Those plastic diapers may be part of the problem, reflecting the light.

I agree with Pat that seeing the whole basket might have been better. If you find the basket too big, perhaps you could drape it with a cloth so the cut off of the sides wouldn't be so obvious.

I was up on a stool, it didn't even think to bring a little step ladder, I guess I will add it to my arsenal of props. I am going to try and tone down the butterfly and i was thinking of making this a bw, something just wasn't sitting right with me on this pic, maybe it was the combo of everything. I am sure the parents will love it, but for my its not up to par. I def needed a reflector at the top of their heads, I had them in front of a window, I didn't think it was going to be that bad. Now I know for next time. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.

I did a level adjustment, a little dodging, and some color adjustment. Please don't take offense, but I find your Watermark very ditracting from the image. A bit smaller and removed from the focal point of the image would help I think. If you would like me to take this down, please let me know.

It's ok to edit. That watermark was just a quick thing with the program in flickr. It's nothing permanent. I made it then had to do real work so I just saved it as a for now.

I would have to say that the lighting is off as well. The concept is great but the butterfly should be a little bit more of a neutral color or smaller.

I agree the lighting is off, if I had a reflector I think it would've worked better. I like the butterfly personally, maybe I will desaturate it a bit so it doesn't stand out so much, but I think it works, maybe I will try a smaller one. I appreciate all the advice and criticism, it helps a lot to see what is wrong from another set of eyes and also helps me learn. I loved shooting these two and it's absolutely something I want to continue to delve into.

If you used your 18-55 you would have been able to get more, but you probably wouldn't have been able to open up your aperture enough. I went through the same thing on a new baby shoot using a 50 mm on a crop body and only natural light. This led me to the conclusion that I needed the 24-70 2.8 lens. Not only did I buy that, but I bought a full frame camera which would have worked fine with the 50 mm lens.
