Looking at the pictures at the largest size on Flickr, I feel like the focus is a little soft. I'm not sure what settings you used on your camera, but you may want to try stopping down your aperture (larger f-number) to increase your depth of field.

Just a thought. Happy shooting.
Cheers, i did use F11 stop for both shots.

Firstly Jonny check out the FAQs about posting from Flickr. Then you can put an image here rather than expecting people to click for a link which many won't bother to do.

I think this one is the better composed of the two

Only me........... (by jonphilpott22)

The other one seems a little off balance.

You don't allow us to see your EXIF so no comment there. If you don't want it seen on flickr you should post the important numbers (ISO, Shutter Spped, Aperture, focal length) here.

I like them both but me personally I think that you should include the entire head. On portraits my sister and her husband who are both pro photographers say you should have just a little "space" above any portrait.

If it was a formal portrait i would agree but this is a very informal shot and I don't think that cutting off the top of his hair is a problem, any more than it being landscape rather than portrait mode.

Depending on the mode of the image, I too will cut off the top of the head or the side. Usually not just a tiny portion such as this one

mmmmm ... oddly cut off at the throat; would like to see more shoulder or really full face...composition is not "comfortable to the eye".

Cheers for all of your comments, will take into account next time I shoot portraits, I found it very difficult to get my positioning (head/shoulders) correct as i wasnt looking through the viewfinder when the shot was taken, I literally sat on a chair then used my remote in capture.
