I like the original too, but it is a little yellow. As for the leash, I think totally removing it looks weird because of the position of his hand. I would probably leave the black part of the leash and just remove the purple case part. And black animals are notoriously hard to photograph, nice job

I like the original. The leash doesn't really detract if you ask me. It gives a reason for his hand to be there.

I like the other crop too, i think having the horizon a little higher and letting them fill the frame more looks more pleasing to me. I agree on the leash, it was kind of a toss up. I was personally happy with myself for removing it and having it look relatively normal but the position of his hand does throw me a bit.
How would i remedy the yellow cast in the original? Thanks for all the advice everyone, I am starting to see things a lot different. I am much more critical of my photos thats for sure.

I took a whack at it.

Photobucket

Corrected the color balance (Turned down yellow and red)
Cloned out hotspots on their foreheads
Adjusted over all exposure, brightened highlights quite a bit
Isolated water and sky and increased saturation
Burned in mid tones around dog to tone down the flash
Decreased the red in their skin by using a flesh-toned paintbrush on the color setting at a low opacity.
Cropped out part of the sky
I didn't adjust the levels of the dog because I think it makes them look really unnatural and odd.
