The lighting almost seem like it was on-camera flash. I see the the catch light is almost dead center in his pupils which makes the picture kind of flat. That is a reason why people try to avoid on-camera straight flash. Move your lights a bit to the left or right and even up a little.

In your second pic you placed your light source low which created a shadow from the mustach on his cheek. I would have moved the lights up higher so the shadow is by his lip.

If you want to get your background pure black move your subject further away from it. Also control your light spill onto the background by using light modifiers like grids, softbox, ie. You can also move your lights closer to the subject so less light will spill onto the background.

Your pics seem sharp and well exposed. Good job
