I do not have that much experience with what makes a portrait, but I took this picture of my daughter today, and I really like it. My questions are: How is the composition - is it a portrait or more photojournalism-type picture? Is the white part of the sky too hot and distracting?

Overall an excellent result................your daughter is slightly underexposed (too light) but only by a fraction..........I love her expression and I also love the background colors and how it's all out of focus..............if you can go back again.............try getting the bars straight and also either more or less of your daughter as currently she is in no mans land so to speak............however in saying all this, it's still a beautiful image and well captured and yes it's in the portrait mode..........well done

colors look a bit cold. The white looks to have a large amount of cyan in it.

Great shot and even if you could recreate, it looks like the bars form a "V" so I don't think you'd ever be able to get them all straight. Colors might be a bit cool, but I think it conveys a feeling of Autumn.
