Default My toddler boy discovering nature

I got brave and took my son outside and switched out of automatic portrait mode and into a semi manual mode (Apeture Priority) on a canon rebel xsi. A little scary at first but i see now, the control is awesome. My question is...
How is the exposure/DOF? any changes suggested? and
Does this crop work? I felt funny using only a portion of his face but visually, I felt this was where it worked best.
Is the bw conversion contrasting enough?

He is asking me what that is. I think its the first time Hes ever seen a mushroom.

Very cute!

I would lighten his face a bit and darken the mushroom. The mushroom is so bright that it pulls the attention away from his cute little face.

+1. When I first looked, I saw the mushroom, sleeve and hand - then noticed the little boy's face.

The crop is a little too tight from the top IMHO.

Good for you for getting out of auto mode, keep practicing!

Great capture.
But your photo inspired me, I hope you do not mind.
