Smile Barn Shot, First Post

This photograph is the first one I have posted, so I am not entirely sure if I am doing it the right way. I am fairly new to photography and pretty low on equipment (only my Powershot G10 and me) Any critique is greatly appreciated, but specifically angle of the shot and position of the subject.

Welcome to DPS!

Any digital camera will do if you are learning about composing great shots. If I were to take this portrait, I will take it at a lower angle, a bit lower than the eye level of my subject and I would use a simpler background. The X mark behind her is a bit distracting for me and I will have more space to where her eyes are directed.

Explore the other features of your camera esp. if it has Manual mode.

I hope to see more of your portraits.

Rick

Hi and welcome to DPS. I'm sorry but this shot is right out of "Children of the Corn." It would make the shot more personable if you had your subject making eye contact with the camera. Placing her right smack in front of that X also makes her look like a target. Hope this helps your next composition.

Default barn door

Personally, I find the bard door itself distracting. You might move her away from the door a bit and, if you camera will let you select a wide aperture, shorten the depth of field. It's not a difficult technique, if you have either manual or aperture priority settings on your camera.

I agree with the above post about the gaze; I wonder where she's looking. There doesn't seem to be a reason for her to be looking that direction, so it seems odd to me.
