Default To Much Negative Space?

Does this photo have to much negative space? I like it but my mom doesn't...
I just wanted to ask for the opinion of the pros.

hi there,
not a pro but yes I think there is way too much space in this image. Love the colours and sharpness but not the fact that the composition is to central. would look cool cropped.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for sharing.

The composition needs improving. The subject has lots of personality to capture but the space around it distracts from her. You should study up on portrait composition. I think this portrait should have been vertical and she should have filled the frame.

I took everyone advise and cropped it both in landscape and portrait.
Now which one of these crops is better?
(Sorry for the bad compression...)

Landscape is definately better. The portrait crop still leaves too much negative space...the subject is essentially in the lower half. If you have not read up on the rule of thirds, check it out, it will help a lot in composition.

If you crop it in portrait frame, she has to fill the whole frame.

There are certainly time where negative space adds to a photograph. To me, this is not the case for this photograph. I think a crop where she completely fills the frame would be best.
