Default portrait for our mother

My sister and I decided to take a photo together to frame for our mom.

What I am wondering is, do the highlights on top of the head ruin the picture?
what could I have done better as far as lighting goes?
Does the background take away from the photo?

Canon EOS Digital Rebel
f/8
1/60 sec.
ISO 100
exposure bias- 0.3 step (not sure why because I didn't set this, on purpose anyway)

MAYBE you could have used a reflector so that there would some light on the face and lessen the highlights on the head...

You did a great job in composing the shot and the both of you look great with your smiling faces. I think if you waited till later in the day when the sun would have been less over head and more on an angle to highlight your faces.

Thank you. Unfortunately we were on a bit of a time crunch which was why I had to do this in the middle of the day. I will definitely keep the reflector in mind, its about time I got one.
