My new lights arrived today, they are just some cheap studio lights off of ebay. I am new to photography and would like some suggestions for improving my portrait photos.
This is a self portrait taken in my garage. Camera EOS Digital Rebel XSI Lens EF 24-70mm 1:2.8 L USM ISO-100 Exposure 1/250 F-stop f/6.3 Britek HS-2000 on umbrella Britek HS-2000 on softbox Britek PS-200 for backlight Background - Black bed sheet Any comments and suggestions welcome. ______________________ Canon Rebel Xsi Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Canon EF 70-200mm 1:2.8 L IS USM Canon 430 EX II Speedlite www.hayspix.com |

You did a decent job on this. You didn't say how your lighting was arranged but from looking at the photo I think it would be improved if you had a light source coming from above camera left to get rid of those shadows. The rest of the exposure looks fine to me.

should have used a reflector to throw a little light back on the left hand side of his face. But lighting is a learning process. Check out strobist.com, and get Joe McNally and Michael Grecco's books on lighting.
