Default Low light & motion

straws

Camera: Nikon D60
Exposure: 0.033 sec (1/30)
Aperture: f/4.5
Focal Length: 82 mm
ISO Speed: 140
Exposure Bias: -1 EV
Flash: No Flash

Okay so I'm posting another kiddie shot but I haven't shot a lot and am trying to gain some bearing. If this were your shot would you include it in your book? Does the motion of the straw and his hand distract?

I would have *loved* to have got a shot with the straw/hand remaining still. I must have shot this about 20 times and in each instance I had motion on the straw in one form or another (the 4-year old refused to sit totally still). Is there a way to freeze action under these lighting conditions?

Thanks in advance.

Try increasing your ISO and shutter speed. 1/30 is not going to stop motion.

I don't think the motion is that distracting... It's a nice picture, and the motion gives some clue as to what she's doing (what is she doing, btw!?)

What lens are you using? Does the aperture open up and further than that? That would give you a faster shutter speed, which would freeze the motion better. You'd have to trade that off against the depth of field, though...

If that's not an option, a flash would help to freeze the motion, but that will change the look of the shot... It's all trade-offs, I'm afraid!

Yes, trade-offs, trade-offs you're right. The lens used was my 70-200mm nikor.
