Thanks everyone, i think im understanding the concept behind aperture settings and DOF. The puppy is a 9 week old Rottweiler named Kreegah, they just got him last week and i thought it was a good time to get some shots ofhim withthe kids. I wanted the focal point to be the girl (my niece Haley) but i think with more work on understanding the aperture i can do much better next time. I think the best thing for me is to just get out and shoot more. Im going to try and get some more shot of the kids this week, ill post some on my flickr page

This is my next lens so it is interesting to see what trickery it takes to master. Post more about your experience with it.
That said and your encouragement to let you have it. First this is a great shot and the composition is well balanced! I find temperature too warm and contrast too high for my tastes. The aspens and her hair are too close in color and draw my eye away from the rest of the picture. What you really want is for the eye to follow the puppy up the jacket and land on her cheek. The saturation of her hair pulls your eye in the other direction. Of course this is one man's opinion. Here is what I mean:![]() (and please if it bothers you that I edited your photo, I will gladly take it down, no offense intended...) Cheers
