I'm very new at this and anything to improve would be appreciated. My friend was nice enough to let me practice taking some pics of her about a month ago and this is one of my favorites from the set. Thanks in advance for any critques.

it's a nice picture. i like how blurred the background is. it's not too soft and not too sharp.

the choice of background really compliments her hair color and you caught the light on her hair just adds to it.

the focus on her face is a bit soft though. i'm not sure if that's due to you uploading the picture and letting picasa take over and resize it to 1600 on the longest side or how the picture was originally taken.

her face also seems to be a bit underexposed. you could easily fix that in pp and make her eyes pop at the same time.

try to get her out there for a reshoot. you did well.

Thanks to you all for the critiques. I will try to put your suggestions into practice the next time I have some one to photograph.

Thanks Bob

agree with Kencaleno and oldwolf

the jumper is a bit "cool" and isnt white, and the face is too dark. so upping the exposure a bit fixed it right up.

Agree with others......... nice match of BG with sunlight on hairs......and the problem of underexposure too..

Common practice for portrait photography is meter the face for Exposure........ that'll give much better results in terms of exposure
