Default Cheeky

I took this shot of my nephew and wished after I took it that it "popped" more than it does. He has such dark eyes that I think it takes away from the photo. I was just wondering if people think it would pop more if I lighten the eyes or if there was something I could have done better in actually taking the shot that would have fixed that? Any suggestions you have would be so helpful!

Thanks!

Cute shot!

Hope you don't mind, here's what I did:

adjusted the colors a bit which improved skin tone (IMO)
sharpened the entire pic, then once more sharpened his eyes
colorized the cushion next to his face so as not take attention from eyes
added a slight vignette to draw attention more to center

Not sure if it helps or if you like, but thought I'd give it a quicky try.

The whites of his eyes and one tooth look blue-green to me. Are the sofa cushions supposed to be white? I'd suggest pulling some blue and some green out of the image overall. Fix that and maybe blur the background more and you've got a winner!
