Default Black and white shot of a mother and kids

Here is another shot I'd like to share with everyone.

EXIF info:
Canon EOS REBEL T1i
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM lens
f/2.8
1/400s
ISO-200
0-step
95mm
Max aperture 3
Metering mode Pattern
Subject distance 20.6m
No flash

What do you think about the composition and whether there is too much contrast? This is edited in LR. The editing involved changing the color photo to B&W, giving more contrast and cropping.

Any other feedback is greatly appreciated!

Family

How did you convert this? A preset?

Actually no presets were used. Just used LR3 B&W settings and played around with the tone curves and such.

I really like this photo but agree with your suspicion that there is too much contrast. That said I do like the overall tone of the picture so I wouldn't like to see you go totally the other way.

I find the guy in the centre-top region of the background (dark jacket) distracting and would suggest considering cloning him out.

I love the overall composition and the story-telling.

How do you measure & evaluate the "too much" contrast...? I can't really analyze it.

Yeah, I think the "white" (or "highlights"?) is a little too white...might be a bit better if it's a darker shade of grey.

too much contrast, as in this image, means too much white and too much black with little to no gray. The contrast is too high on this image for my taste. The image is ok but for me it is nothing more than a snapshot of the fam with some 'flair' added. Nothing wrong with that if this was the direction you were going or if you are happy with the image.

You can't really measure and analyze it...it is just the feeling you get when you look at the picture. If you find your eye is having a hard time picking up details or focusing on the pic, then odds are it is over exposed or too bright.

The original picture, which is in color, is overexposed. This final product is due to LR3 editing. I do agree the contrast could've been toned down more to give more grey and more detail for the surroundings.

The "brightness" is a bit distracting.
