I really like this photo but agree with your suspicion that there is too much contrast. That said I do like the overall tone of the picture so I wouldn't like to see you go totally the other way.
I find the guy in the centre-top region of the background (dark jacket) distracting and would suggest considering cloning him out. I love the overall composition and the story-telling. |

How do you measure & evaluate the "too much" contrast...? I can't really analyze it.

The image is ok but for me it is nothing more than a snapshot of the fam with some 'flair' added. Nothing wrong with that if this was the direction you were going or if you are happy with the image.

You can't really measure and analyze it...it is just the feeling you get when you look at the picture. If you find your eye is having a hard time picking up details or focusing on the pic, then odds are it is over exposed or too bright.
