Very new to all this, but enjoying it so very much. Would like your opinions on this candid shot of my grandaughter taken at Christmastime. I love using black and white, but would like to have other's opinions on the color that was left to "pop" in the pics. I like it, but not sure if it takes away from her. Thank you!!
Taken with a Canon Eos T2i and 28-55mm lens. I used Adobe Elements to change to B/W and leave the pop of color. Last edited by cb3228; 02-02-2012 at 08:57 PM. |

If you're going to do selective color with people in the image, you run the risk of the people looking like zombies. This is particularly the case when the color is very saturated and when it is the clothing that is left in color.
I'd also recommend that when you do your B&W conversion, you make sure to increase the dynamic range of the photo so that there are parts that are very nearly white and parts that are very nearly black, especially in the subject. To me, at least, your conversion here looks pretty gray. In future, I'd recommend trying to avoid cropping off arms and hands below the elbow and legs below the knees, because it looks a bit awkward. All that said, I'd really like to see a full-color or fully B&W version of this photo, because I think you've captured a very nice moment.
