Default Concert photos: my first attempt

I just got a Canon 5D (i) and thought a little concert at our church would be perfect practice.
I borrowed a friend's Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L (his 70-200mmL was unavailable...that would have been perfect!)

Exposure: 1/50
ISO: 1600
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal length: 70mm
Flash: none

I would like to know better metering tips for this lighting circumstance.

Lighting looks ok... my main problem is that I can hardly see the performer... I would have composed the shot differently so I could retain some of the background lighting, which is nice, but had more of an interesting focal point.

Good for a first attempt though

Thank you! Yes, I would have loved to focused more on composition, but have you ever tried shooting around pre-teen girls?? They are ruthless! Haha, I stopped trying to get in and get the shots I really wanted and just let the girls have their fun. Hey, it was all just for practice and a favor for a friend.
