Default Shot number 3 from my experiment with light

Here's another shot from my series of experiments over new year with using a single light source.

This time it's lit using an outside security light that is on the wall opposite the subject... which is actually me as this was my 1st attempt at a self portrait.

High ISO, largish DOF as found using a shallow one difficult for nailing focus on my eyes, and set a timer before running in to position.

How did I do? Does the lighting work? is the focus sharp enough? Any suggestions on what I could have done to improve the image?

Exif data
Camera Canon EOS 450D
Exposure 0.05 sec (1/20)
Aperture f/9.0
Focal Length 19 mm
ISO Speed 1600
Flash Off, Did not fire
Exposure Program Manual
Metering Mode Spot

I really like this image. Love the light, focus looks nice and sharp to me. Not much I can find to nitpick about. Great job.

Thanks, as it was my 1st attempt at doing a self portrait, and as I used a powerful security light to illuminate me I'm pleased I managed to do a good job

Andy, I love this photo. Love the dramatic effect and the angle.

What a fabulous job for a first-time self portrait!

As a suggestion for next time, what about bringing the lighting and camera up for a higher perspective? I thought that this would be difficult, so perhaps if you actually crouch or sit on the ground to get this type of shot? Would love to see more of your face looking up just as variety.

Cheers Andy, I love your passion.

Hi Grace, thanks for the comments

I was quite restricted by the angle of the light as it was fixed to a wall, so I'm probably quite lucky that I could get any type of usable angle for a shot from it. I hadn't even thought about different perspectives until you mentioned it, I just kind of stood where I needed to for the light to illuminate me and then set everything up from there... but i'll keep your suggestions in mind should I do any shots like this in future.

There's a famous dutch photographer called Anton Corbijn who uses lines a lot in his pics, so I took a lot of inspiration for this pic from his work, if you haven't heard of him I'd highly recommend checking out some of his stuff

I have another couple of shots from the series to post yet for critique so please keep an eye out as I'll post them soon

I LOVE Anton Corbjin. Not just for his photographs but more so for his videos and films. I grew up with his videos, being a Depeche Mode fanatic that I was in my earlier years. Of course, from there, you get to recognise his other works as his style is very distinct.

Can't wait to see more photos! I'm probably going to post some after the wedding as I'm sure I'll need some technical help. Sigh.

Cheers,

G.-

Haha nice to speak to a kindred spirit!

Have you seen the film "control"? Anton directed it and it's really good!

I think I might continue my series of B&W shots and see where it takes me... I'll also be doing wedding stuff etc, but it's great to find something like this to do as helps keep my mind sharp.

Will post another one from this set tomorrow if I get the chance
