Default Palace of Fine Arts - critique this shot

Hi there. Brand new here and very serious about photography, but having a very hard time. I am struggling with focus and that crisp look that makes a picture pop.

I took this shot of my boys at the Palace of Fine Arts.

Would love to know what you would have done differently.

Canon Rebel XS
f 4.5

First thing I wouldn't have chopped their feet off. Second, why is there so much seperation between the two? Third, with the clothing try and stay away from patterns or designs.

I can't really tell much at this size. I think it's a very nice image and my only critique is about the feet.... I might have liked to see the entire door/ door frame as a "frame" for the subjects.

Thank you for the feedback.

We just happened to be in SF for the day with my camera I didn't dress them thinking they were going to be taking pictures, but that is good feedback about their shirts.

I have been so busy worried about the focus I didn't even think about the feet. I will watch for that next time.

I know it is hard to tell from this size so I will try to add a link to a bigger file. I am wondering how I could have had them at the same distance but gotten both of their faces in focus and got the shot really sharp.

As far as the faces being in focus, as long as they are on the same plane, it doesn't matter what the aperature is. You could be shooting at F/1.4 and the would both be in focus, now if you had one in front of the other, that would be different.
