Default Piano Recital

This is a pic of my brother at his piano recital. Unfortunately, they turned the piano so that when I took the picture everyone was in the background. If they wouldn't have done that a nicely lit Christmas tree would have been behind him, which I thought would look nice.

Exif:
Canon 20d
Tamron 60mm F/2
Aperature Priority
Average Metering Mode
1/30 of a second
f/2.8
I turned both contrast and color tone up on the camera.

Edit: If any of you would like to use this image to edit and then repost on DPS to show what you are explaining, feel free.

Just want some critique on exposure and composition. With the piano being black, the music was overexposed, but I kind of like it that way. I like the feel that the lighting creates, but can't figure out why it turned out like that. Was it the boost in contrast and color tone? Personally I really like this photo, I just hate that they turned the piano!

Its an interesting shot and I can't see a lot wrong with it.

I think that the boy is a little too far to the right though and you could maybe crop some of the left and top off so that the light is more in the top left corner as this would balance the image better.

The exposure looks good but the focus on the boy seems a little soft, not sure where you focussed but I would have focussed on his face.

Background isn't too distracting, it actually kind of works because it gives some context to the pic (i.e. a piano recital rather than just a boy playing piano at home)

Don't be so hard on yourself, I actually really like the background! As ajax_andy mentioned, it gives some context for the shot. And I like how the light is hitting the mask of his face. All in all it is a great photo!

I really like the shot. As the "official - unofficial" photography for a high school band (marching and symphonic), you really have to work with the cards that are dealt to you. I agree with the background contributing favorably by supporting the event was in front of an audience. I'd like to see his face be higher in the shot (1/3rds), but the lamp is working against you. You might not have been in a position to be higher to make that adjustment. The thing I struggle with in similar circumstances is to get the angle I want without distracting from the performance. I suspect the family will be real happy with the picture.

Default Crop

Here is a crop of the picture based on the suggestions. I tried bringing his head more towards the horizontal 1/3 line and brought the light more into the corner. I can definitely see the softness of his face as I crop it.

I think the crop is an improvement. Good work.
