One of the major issues on this are the shadows on the subjects. The child's face is half there and half not. The father is badly shadowed in some areas. It is always very, very difficult to get a decent picture when the sun is passing through open tree limbs like that. The criss-cross pattern that is developed by the shadows and intense light pretty much makes a mess of person in the picture unless it is intentional in some way. they are also very centered. It would have been good to take the pic in a way that shows the trail leading further back into or out of the picture and to have the subjects somewhat off center. Good attempt though.
