Here is an image that I took of my buddy. My question is, just because its night does it make this a non realistic setting or do you think it offers better results or worst results then it would during the day. I personally really like it because of the bokeh. Let me know on your opinion please!

And I was also going for the lifted blacks by the way.

Can you post here on this web site, in your thread, for us to see. Rather than a link?

My 2 cents is that you need to deepen your blacks. Your blacks are appearing closer to a natural grey which is giving the image a flat look. In order to get true blacks in the night sky, you may need to use a little fill flash on your subject.

EDIT: Something like this.

Hey thanks for the advice. My style is sort of the lifted blacks and sometimes I like to mess around with it.

You'll find that you'll have mixed reviews on the style you are aiming for. I do think that most people will think that the 'lifted black' feel you are trying to achieve may seem too flat. I do understand the feel that you are trying to get and it's almost in a vintage style where the scene is diffused with a little red or orange, hence, you won't get complete blacks or whites in the image. I guess it's almost like a filtered effect.

I almost like it but I think it's just not quite there. Perhaps it's the the right style for this image. Also, I tend to like my higher contrasts with photos and I like my blacks really black, like the edit that Eric did with your photo.

I do feel that you just need to keep tweaking and playing until you nail exactly the style that you want. At the moment, it feels that you are still in this experimental stage which reflects on this photo.

You do have good eyes though from what I remember of another photo you posted for critique so I'm watching out for you, kid. Looking forward to your progression in to this journey.

Cheers,

Grace

Thank you so much for the advice! And yes I can see how some people wouldn't be a fan of the lifted blacks. I like it more in surf videos and promo videos for different creative fashion videos. I just sort of wanted to test it out and see what people thought. Deeper blacks might be a better bet for this photo. Oh and grace check out more of my work. I am so happy you made this reply. thank you!

here is more work from me,
