Default My first portraits...

Hi guys, I'm new here although I've been reading for awhile now and learning. This is my first post and both of these photos are the best shots from my first set of my wife. I literally took these as soon as my battery was done charging and I finished reading the owners manual. lol

Please critique all you can.

Thank you.

The first picture is purposely soft (if that's a good word for it). I didn't know how to make it look soft other than keeping it out of focus a tad, if that makes any sense. I didn't touch it up at all, although I think I might soften my wife's face a smidge.

The second shot I touched up a bit and cropped. These are both JPEG's although I did shoot in RAW as well. I'm just used to photoshopping JPEG's so I actually forgot the RAW's

I might add, the first shot was done with a nifty fifty, while the 2nd was using my kit 18-55mm.

When i purchased my camera I opted for the 50mm over a telephoto lens, but I can already tell i'll be adding one to my collection VERY SOON! lol

Thanks again.

very nice. I do like the soft effect on the first one. You should double check the rules for critique section and add your exif data.
On the first one I might have left more in the frame to the right and not chop off the kitty's eye...

I like the B/W. Her expression, I think? If she was looking at the camera in the B/W all the better IMO.

oh and sorry about the exif data. I posted both pictures along with the settings used in the same post yesterday, but for some reason the 2nd picture and data didn't post.
