Default New here, first DSLR

So this is a picture of my son, the first time shooting on manual mode, with my very first DSLR. I've done a bit of post-processing on it (curve adjustments in LAB, a bit of sharpening). Any tips on what could make it better? Is the sharpening too much? I always have a hard time knowing the right amount to sharpen.

Aperture was 5.3, shutter speed 1/800 second, ISO 1250 (I forgot to change it down after practicing inside a bit ) and focal length 66 mm. Lens is just the kit lens (18-105 mm) that comes with the Nikon D7000.

I really like this photo a lot. It has a good background blur and a very sharp focus on the eyes
