Default First Maternity Shoot

I shot this couple this weekend. They were great. She's not as far along as we would have liked but her husband is shipping out with the Navy in a couple of weeks and they wanted to get some shots together. I have a ghetto type studio set up with one softbox and my SB600 off camera as a hair light. Let me know how I did with the B/W conversion. I'm not sure about the light on the back of his neck. Should I try and tone that down in post??

EXIF:

Camera Nikon D300
ISO: 320
Aperture: 6.3
Shutter: 1/50th

I think you did awesome. I checked out the whole set and your lighting is very nice. I think you placed that rim/hair light perfect. With just two lights you rocked these. I also like your choice of poses...the selective color of the dad holding the blocks is cute - it's one of those selective color shots that's done right (imo). nice work.

I also really like the lighting. I think the light on the back of his neck is quite natural, as if they're standing in front of a window. If I was nitpicking, I'd say her face seems a little brighter than his, but it's a small thing. Nice shot!

Thanks to all of you. She is rather fair compared to him and of course she was close to the light source, so I suppose that's why she looks brighter. I'm feeling a little more confident now!

Not bad! I didn't puke seeing the selective colored photo either Only thing I notice on one of your photos on flickr is that you spelled their little girls name wrong in the title. Keep doing what you're doing!

Thanks Brian, spelling has never been my strong suit, I'll fix it. Now I want to get "real" studio lights and see what I can do!

I know nothing about studio lighting, but I think this is lovely. The lighting is so nice, and the conversion is beautiful!

This very beautiful shot Do you have a continuous lights or light with flash? I have those old fashion lights and hate them, but really this is a great shot.

Thanks for your comment. I was using a softbox that is a continuous light, they don't have near the light output of strobes, so I had issues getting a decent exposure and still had to bump it up in PP. The softbox was borrowed....I'm trying to figure out how to justify getting my own. Maybe I'll get some referrals from this couple.
