First attempt at Portrait..

Hi There

I'm new to DPS and am looking for a bit of feedback on this pic I took a while back. It's one of my favourite pictures of my son, but know that as a novice there are probably hundreds of ways I could improve it! Luckily, he's very cooperative and will let me mess around taking pics for ages - so I can take any advice and have another go!

Welcome to DPS and posting images for feedback is a great way to improve... I have found this site really helpful and hope you do too.

With regards your pics I think both are really good, the 1st one being especially good.

A couple of things I'd say are:

Both pics the focus isn't on the eyes... If you'd focussed on the eyes you'd have taken the pics to a whole new level.

The 2nd pic the hand seems a bit blurred so I think your shutter speed was too slow... increase this and either up your ISO, open your Aperture or use fill flash to avoid this.

You definately have an eye for a good photo though and I think you captured some great moments here... not too staged and posed, nice and natural... very good, just a little work on the technical side of things will help you improve the pics no end

Don't forget you may use the vertical position as well.
